Parisian Women Series by Kiras

Days of France

In 1959, Marcel Dassault noticed Kiraz's drawings in Ici Paris. He asked him to provide two pages of humorous drawings in his weekly, Jours de France. Marcel Dassault suggested calling these two pages "Les Parisiennes". Kiraz found the title distressing, but he accepted.

Jours de France sees the appearance of Kiraz's sophisticated creatures — each week in a new setting: Parisian women in the office, Parisian women at the wheel, Parisian women on vacation. These slender, oversized-legged nunuches begin by disconcerting. Then they seduce. Brainless, tangy, smart, sexy, they offer "a vision of French futility that only a foreign eye could capture."

"Everything about these slender girls seemed to defy gravity," notes the painter and essayist Ange-Henri Pieraggi. The almond-shaped eyes, the fluid lines, a stylized line of great class, the reflections of fashion, the world of the beautiful neighborhoods, the fashion detail, an ease in interpreting the spirit of the times, a very personal humor impose Kiraz as a completely extraordinary designer, and earn him great success. "Independent," remembers Carla Bruni, "frivolous, unfaithful but traditional, naive but also mischievous, calculating but spontaneous, these were the Parisian women [...] Parisian women are Parisian women, light and timeless, and I wish their future husbands much courage."
